I actually think that a greater number of the general public are wanting to know where their food is incoming from. With this, it is 'fashionable' to support local producers. A vast majority of the food buying public still look for ease of buying in one place (supermarkets) but exposure to the most popular median (tv) of small local producers, educational food programs, and an insight into the lives and loves of community producers, will swing the pendulum back to local, seasonal, fresh produce. Here's hoping!

Dear BigBarn-Team,

Through @IrishFoodies I cam accross your post and must say that I 100% agree on the principle of cutting out all the middle men and connecting food producers directly with the consumers. (in fact our new start-up foodieSquare aims at that direction of connecting food producers directly with the end-consumer)

I think that people must get a feeling again for who produces food, how it is produced and what ingredients are in.

On top of that, farmers/food producers will be incouraged to not only produce cheap but to look on quality and diversity because they get more of each £1 spent on food.

Hope that you guys rock on in the UK!

Great point Sue and thanks, One of my favourite facts about the food industry at the moment is that in some shops milk is cheaper than water.

It only seems so expensive because we have been trained to expect milk at such a low price by the supermarkets. This price is not realistic as the farmer makes a loss at that price and that is why so many go out of business! We pay more for a bottle of water than a bottle of milk... and think how much more has gone into producing the milk. Or think of the price of a pint of beer compared to a pint of milk! If we want our cows to not be intensively farmed and we want the dairy farmers to stay in business we need to be realistic about the price we are prepared to pay for milk.

Although this grace could be viewed a fairly light hearted, i feel it carries an important message about the nature of food production in this country. There have been points in our history, primarily before WWI when much of our food was imported, and if the current siutation worsens then those days could return. The food we eat, the vegetables, meat and cereals, and their production are not merely a means to an end, nor should they be just profit for big corporations, they are a vital part of our culture and our way of life, and have to be protected.

The one thing that I have found when speaking to a lot of my family and friends is that they can't get over the convenience issue.

They want to be able to buy all fruit, veg, meat, dairy tins etc all in one place rather than going to a farm shop or farmers market for all the fresh stuff every week and then the supermarket for the rest every other week.

The sad thing is that they don't have any connection to the local community or area and therefore don't really care if local farmers/producers etc go out of business.

Only the friends and family members who know of someone or work themselves in a small industry or in farming actually make the effort to shop for fresh food etc outside of the supermarkets.

Unless something effects people directly and they can see it plainly - I don't think things will change anytime soon IMHO.
