Depden Farm Shop and Training
17th May 2012 is the day we open our new farm shop.
Finally, all the ingredients for our shop and cafe are coming together and the end is in sight. We have sourced some wonderful producers, as well as proudly stocking our own lamb, pork, homegrown vegetables and fruit and especially home made cakes.

A hands on and practical introduction to sheep husbandry. Starting with breed choice and key requirements we'll then move onto feeding and nutrition. Working our way through the shepherd’s year we’ll cover basic sheep husbandry and key health issues. There will be lots of hands on sheep handling and chance to perform some of the routine tasks, like dagging and foot trimming. Groups are kept small to ensure that you all get the attention you need for a fulfilling and fun day. | ||||

An introduction to smallholding for beginners and dreamers, giving you an insight into the running of smallholding. A good mix of discussion and hands on practice will ensure you’ll go away with a good understanding of the legal issues, and licensing requirements, sheep and pig keeping basics, poultry keeping, land management and growing your own. We’ll finish with a session on ways of making money (or at least not losing too much!) A practical hands on day on our small farm. | ||||

Fancy a few chucks in the garden for eggs? There’s a bit more to it than buying a couple of ex-batts and coop at the local show – as the people that ask us to take them off their hands will testify. Don’t make the same mistakes and get your chicken keeping off to a flying start with this half day course for the novice. We’ll cover the types of hen, their housing and feeding needs, common diseases and their control to ensure your hens are happy and stress free (and you will be too). | ||||

Small scale pig keeping is not difficult, but if you know what you’re doing it is possible to have can have tasting meat with known providence
We will spend the morning giving you an introduction to buying in young pigs , husbandry and legal requirements. In the afternoon we'll move on to slaughtering requirements and what you might do with some of the meat. This will include some hands on practice on making sausages and bacon at kitchen scale. | ||||

New Farm Shop Opens its Doors
17th May 2012 is the day Suffolk will have a new farm shop. Finally, all the ingredients for Depden Farm Shop are coming together and the end is in sight. We have sourced some wonderful producers, as well as proudly stocking our own lamb, pork, homegrown vegetables and fruit and especially home made cakes. A few of our producers •A delicious range of smoked meat, salami, oils and garlic from the Artisan Smokehouse. •Freshly baked bread from the lovely Mark Procter, Bury's newest artisan baker. •Brundish bacon, sausages and of course their wonderful Suffolk Salami •Everything is made by hand made with love and care at Smugglers Pudding Company, based in Hadleigh and have pudding galore.
