Law to ban food waste

With so much in the news about food waste and good old Hugh on the BBC about it. (For episode 1 click here). Should more be done? For instance, should the UK follow the French and pass a law to ban supermarkets from destroying unsold food and obliges them to give it to charity?

I know we hate following the French but surely this is a great idea:

PROS

Local; a better way to shop

Local; a better way to shop

1.  Excess food will go to the needy instead of subsidised Anaerobic digesters to produce electricity

2.  Food banks and charities will have more to give and help more people

3.  More people will be encouraged to cook fresh produce and live a healthier life

CONS

1.  Supermarkets will probably make less money so bad for shareholders

2.  We live in a free market economy and this law will distort it

Please feedback and add more because I can’t think of any!

Our view at BigBarn is that you would not get this problem if everyone shopped locally. Consumers would realise that wonky veg was perfectly good and enjoy eating it. And any gluts would be used up as local shops provided customers with recipes or preserving instructions on what to do with the cheaper produce.

Try our local food map and see what you can find. Or grow some veg and sell any excess though shops flagged with a carrot meaning Crop for the Shop.
