Walnuts from an in-house orchard in Kent
This orchard is a test bed of 130 different varieties to see which will work best in the English terrain and climate.
The goal of the CIC is to expand UK agroforestry. All profit from the trade is invested into creat-ing farms which combine tree crops with cereal farms. This involves the farm planning, infra-structure investment, and tree purchase.
The combination of rows of nut trees with cereal farms has great capacity to address some of the biggest environmental challenges facing arable farmers; primarily soil loss, fertility reduction, and nitrate run-off. Alley cropping, pictured below, reduces soil loss by an average of 50% and cuts nitrate run-off by 35%.
Current partner farms are based in Suffolk, Kent, and Devon.
