The recent BBC report on Tesco customers being short-changed by out of date promotions is no surprise to us. There really are no excuses for what is essentially fraud. Unfortunately fining the company will probably result in higher food prices as the fine is recovered.
The investigation revealed shoppers were overcharged at two-thirds of stores visited by an undercover reporter. In 33 of 50 stores visited, multi-buy promotions were marked on the shelf, but the time-limited discounts were not applied at tills.
Tesco said it would check the accuracy of pricing at all its stores. Should it also find out which customers had been defrauded and send them credit notes?
To us this displays that Tesco think they are either:
1. above the law,
2. complacent in thinking they can get away with practices like this
3. suffering from the fierce competition and staff cost cutting means they cannot run their stores properly.
Or all 3!
Is so, is a serious food scare coming soon?
Our advice is to give up the supermarkets and shop locally for better fresher food that is often cheaper than the supermarket when the middle men and supermarket supply chains are cut out.
