Cranbrook Farm Shop and Nursery

Having run our successful farm shop for 15 years, it was a shock to find ourselves needing new premises. After a frantic search, we have been very fortunate to secure a new location for our family run business, and in August we re opened at our new site adjacent to Charity Farm Countrystore, Swattenden Lane, Cranbrook. We could not of done this without the fantastic support we have had from the local community, who have been behind us all the way. Now we can get back to what we do best, providing a friendly service to people of Cranbrook and surrounding villages. Pop in and see us!

London Wine Fair's first ever "Online Buyer of the Year" award goes to ... Ben Robson of Bat and Bottle!!!

Bat and Bottle Wine Merchants

Article by Amander Meade The summer of 2020 will go down in history as one of the most challenging ever for the hospitality industry, but one Rutland based family business have bucked the trend and are raising a glass to a spectacular story of success. Ben Robson, Independent Wine Merchant and co-owner of Italian wine import business, ‘Bat and Bottle’, is delighted to announce that he has won the inaugural UK ‘Online Specialist Wine Buyer’ award at this year’s London Wine Fair Awards - the UK’s largest wine trade event. Usually held at Olympia, due to the effects of Covid 19, this year the competition was judged ‘virtually’ although rivalry in all sectors remained fierce with businesses competing for awards in multiple categories. The Online Specialist Wine Buyer award was highly coveted by a wide-ranging set of UK wine businesses but Ben took the title for what the judges described as his “Obvious warmth, sincerity and very evident people skills alongside the fact that he continues to push innovation and drive sales.” In addition to his London Wine Fair triumph, Ben has been honoured with an invitation to become one of the head judges at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020 - the largest wine competition in the world. Over 16,000 wines are judged by an international panel including some of the most highly qualified and respected individuals in the wine industry. Ben will step in to cover as the Regional Chair for Tuscany which involves seven days of tasting every single wine entered from that region. Ben’s proud wife Emma, and co-owner of Bat and Bottle, commented: “Usually this position is taken by a ‘Master of Wine’ or a senior critic or writer. It is very unusual that a self-taught wine merchant is trusted to be totally impartial and reliable. It turns out that Ben’s good humour and his pure, innocent passion for wine has served him well.” In a hat trick of good news, Ben and Emma celebrate 25 years of their artisan wine merchant company this year - although their grand plans have been tailored to fit a new direction thanks to CV19. Ben said: “We are thrilled that our ethos of staying true to an unfashionably idealistic view of wine, has been recognised and helped us gradually turn Bat and Bottle into one of the country’s leading importers of Italian wines. We began with a classic kitchen table and van operation in 1994 and have jointly run the company ever since. Quite simply we specialise in importing carefully selected, sustainably farmed Italian wines. We buy directly from the farm, or cellar, and mostly from small, artisan producers, delivering wine directly to our customers’ doors. Our aim has always been and remains to help our customers enjoy a glass of well-made, delicious wine at home. The past 25 years have been an incredible journey of discovery, teamwork, love of wine and a dash of good fortune. We do not buy wines for our customers – we find customers for our wines. We try to be serious when buying but are never too serious when you are buying from us. We are humbled, honoured and thankful to have reached this 25 year landmark with the industry endorsements that the London Wine Fair award and the invitation from the Decanter World Wine Awards have brought.” Bat and Bottle are trading as usual online with a click and collect system in place. The company offer free delivery for orders of £55 or more within a 10 mile radius of Oakham. The warehouse/shop is open between 1.30 and 3.30pm until further notice, operating on a one-in-one-out basis with local deliveries made between 3.30 and 7pm. Outside of these hours, customers are invited to call 01572 759735 to arrange being met - an informal ‘Rutland by appointment’ operation proving well worth a visit for wine lovers. The diary page of the website at www.bat.wine is updated daily for customers to check that the 'shop' is open. If you would like to see the London Wine Fair Awarding Ben UKs "Online Specialist Wine Buyer of the Year" this is the link to the virtual award ceremony on Youtube: https://youtu.be/GBpuM01aIr8

England's First Carbon Negative Gin

Cooper King Distillery

Yorkshire-based Cooper King Distillery has reached new sustainable heights by becoming the first distillery in England to produce carbon-negative gins as part of its ongoing commitment to fighting climate change. The award-winning eco-distillery’s Dry and Herb Gins are now classed as carbon-negative meaning that for every bottle of spirit created, Cooper King removes more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted. To achieve this status, the carbon footprint of the two gins was reduced as far as possible, before offsetting the remainder with verified carbon credits, to reach carbon-neutral. A further 1kg of CO₂e is then offset per bottle beyond neutral to reach carbon negative status. In addition to carbon offsetting, each bottle of gin plants one square metre of native UK woodland in charitable partnership with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust – Cooper King’s way of investing in the future and doubling down on its commitment to the planet. The result of 12 months’ data collection and analysis, Cooper King’s carbon footprint assessment of its Dry and Herb Gins was extensive and included procurement of its ingredients & packaging, production and distribution. Chris Jaume, Co-Founder, Cooper King Distillery said: “Producing flavour-driven, sustainable drinks has always been at the core of what we do, because we believe drinking good spirits needn’t cost the Earth. After a year’s worth of hard work, and despite a pandemic, we’re delighted that we’ve been able to achieve carbon-negative status for our two core products. “Reaching this milestone is a significant step in our plan to become a carbon-negative distillery. We value people, planet and prosperity, and through sharing our findings in our publicly available Carbon Report we hope to inspire others to make a positive difference.” As part of Cooper King’s commitment to long term sustainability, the team recently planted 30 juniper bushes on site. These could produce enough juniper for around 15,000 bottles of gin a year once mature, though it takes 8-10 years before the female plants will produce their first crop of berries ready for distillation. The business has also signed the United Nations Climate Neutral Now Pledge and was the first distillery in Europe to join environmental initiative 1% for the Planet. 23-year-old founder of non-alcoholic drinks company recognised in Inspirational Young Person Awards

Talonmore Drinks

Lewis Kennedy, 23-year-old Founder of Talonmore Drinks, a non-alcoholic drinks company based in Edinburgh, has received highly commended recognition in NFU Mutual’s Inspirational Young Person Awards. The awards, which are in their third year, were launched by commercial insurer NFU Mutual in partnership with industry body Scotland Food and Drink, seeking to uncover inspirational examples of talented 16 to 26-year-olds who own, work or study in the food and drink sector. The award aims to highlight not only the enormous contribution that young people make to Scotland’s food and drink businesses, but also the importance of the sector to the wider economy. After graduating with a BSc in Product Design, Lewis recognised the growing demand for a healthier option for social drinking. He set to work with a team of experienced food scientists to come up with a non-alcoholic spirit which put flavour at the forefront. Following many rounds of research, review and tasting, Lewis ultimately created Talonmore using infusing and brewing methods which stop flavour being lost while also including superfoods that have recognised health benefits. Drawing on his own artistic skills and in collaboration with creative connections, Lewis designed the product’s bottle and website branding. These illustrated historic landmarks and local wildlife in Lewis’ home city of Edinburgh, helping to appeal to his core target audience. In February 2021, Talonmore was a featured winner of the Venture competition being awarded the prize based on product innovation, place in market and entrepreneurship. Lewis was also invited by the organisers of The Scottish Enterprise Challenge to speak at the 2021launch event to highlight his own journey and encourage and inspire other young graduates. Lewis’ nominee describes him as resilient and enthusiastic, saying that the Talonmore Drinks’ tag line - Dare to Explore – also captures Lewis’ personality and the inspiration he offers to others. Lewis will receive a trophy and £200 cash prize in recognition of his highly commended entry. Having originally intended to select a top three, the judges found the quality of this year’s applications too hard to separate, and ultimately decided to recognise 1 st , 2 nd and four highly commended winners. Lewis Kennedy, highly commended in this year’s awards, said: "It is fantastic to receive this recognition following the launch of Talonmore in June. I would like to thank NFU Mutual and Scotland Food and Drink for this award and for their ongoing support. I am excited to see what the future holds." Mark McBrearty, NFU Mutual Regional Manager: “Selecting a winner and two runners up from a record-breaking number of entries this year was too difficult, which is why we decided on an additional three awards. I am delighted to be congratulating Lewis! All of our award-winners have not only done themselves proud, but they are also wonderful ambassadors for our world-famous food and drink industry. “I was particularly impressed by how each of them has not only coped, but thrived throughout the pandemic, a time when the industry has truly suffered. I feel confident that the sector is in safe hands if they are just some examples of the young people coming forward within the wonderful range of food and drink firms in Scotland. “A huge congratulations to our fantastic winners and a big thank you to everyone involved!” James Withers, Chief Executive at Scotland Food and Drink, said: “Scotland’s food and drink industry is full of talented youngsters who are going to be driving our sector forward in the coming years and all the finalists are a great example of the enormous contribution that young people make to Scotland’s food, drink and hospitality businesses. “The field of entries was incredibly strong this year, from entrepreneurs starting up their own businesses to young people already making a huge difference inside big companies. It gives us huge optimism for the future of our sector.”
