Bottesford Beautiful | Blueberry & Orange Jam

Sold by: Barlows of Belvoir

Most blueberries have a sweet taste with a bit of acidity, they're often said to be sweeter than grapes and are very juicy. We have enhanced the taste by adding a twist of orange which takes this product to another level.

Bottesford, a case of witches. Prior to the death of Francis, the Earl of Rutland’s second son in 1620, suspicion for this and other incidents fell on a three members of staff who were a mother and two sisters from the Flowers family of Bottesford. Namely Joan, Margaret and Philippa, they were known locally as herbal healers. They were dismissed with only Joan receiving any compensation.

They were unpopular with the staff at the castle prior to their dismissal. The Earl and Countess were convinced of their wrongdoing and they had them arrested for witchcraft. They were sent to Lincoln to be hanged.

So convinced were the Earl and Countess that their son had been killed by the effects of witchcraft, that they had it inscribed on their monument at Bottesford church. It reads, in part:

In 1608 he married ye Lady Cecila Hungerford, daughter to ye Honourable Knight Sir John Tufton, by whom he had two sons, both of which died in their infancy by wicked practises and sorcery.

The humble blueberry is supposed to possess magical properties providing the consumer with the following; Calm, peace, protection, passion and fertility. We can’t attest to any of this, but by adding some orange the taste is certainly enchanting.
