Burton Lazars Bizarre Berry | Red Onion & Mixed Berry Chutney

Sold by: Barlows of Belvoir

In days of olde, wild berries of great variety were collected across the environs of Burton Lazars, some to feed the locals and other for the hospital run by the Order of St Lazarus.

The village, originally named "Burtone", has a natural sulphurous spring which was probably the main reason it was chosen as a location to set up a hospital for the treatment of leprosy.

In the 12thCentury, the village became the English headquarters of the Order and around that time became known as Burton St Lazarus, later to be shortened to Burton Lazars.
This colourful history certainly warrants inclusion in our product range, especially as our Bizarre Berry chutney conveys all the richness and colour of the Medieval age.
